Birds & Bubbles is one of the smartest concept restaurants to pop up in New York in a while. It pairs two of our favorite things: fried chicken and bubbly, which range from glasses of sparkling wine to bottles of champagne. The location is a bit off the beaten path, in a discreetly marked basement-level shop between Chinatown and the Lower East Side, which will hopefully keep the crowds away and ensure us a seat for now. Along with their well-seasoned and extremely moist fried chicken, the cozy restaurant also serves up delicious modern takes on traditional Southern sides, like shrimp and grits, mac & cheese, slaw, gumbo and green bean casserole. We recommend trying the "Runner Up" combo, which includes half of a fried chicken, the amazing bread basket with two each of the jalapeno cornbread, biscuit and roll, and three sides of your choice. We went with the crispy potato salad, our favorite dish of the night, mac & cheese and slaw. The portions are definitely enough for two people, but if you're with four or more, they also offer a "Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner" combo that comes with a whole chicken.
For an elevated Southern dining experience, Birds & Bubbles is a must.
