We’re blessed to live in a city that’s home to some of the most delicious and innovative food in the world. But with eight million residents, plus millions more tourists, crowding our streets every day, it’s nearly impossible to experience some of the top eats … unless you’re willing to wait in a very long line.
From cronuts to cat cafes to Black Seed bagels and now the Nutella bar at Eataly, the New York food scene is hotter than ever. And thanks to blogs like Eater and Grub Street stalking the restaurant industry’s every move, getting your hands on the latest cult item can be nearly impossible or just not worth it.
Until last weekend, that was our experience with Chinatown Ice Cream Factory‘s egg custard ice cream. Through word of mouth, we had heard that this insanely delicious and unique flavor was a must-try, especially given how obsessed we are with traditional Hong Kong egg custard tarts. But after a handful of failed attempts–the shop always ran out of the flavor by the time we arrived–we were resigned to the fact that it was just never going to happen.
Flash forward one year later to a chilly and windy Sunday afternoon in early May. We were in Chinatown running some errands when we saw Chinatown Ice Cream Factory around the corner. With no particular motive in mind, we wandered in and spotted the holy grail: a full tub of pale yellow egg custard ice cream sitting in the freezer.
Of course, we had to grab a scoop, along with their heavenly black sesame ice cream, on a cone. The flavor itself was a distinct twist on vanilla. Was it worth the hype? I’ll let you decide for yourself, but it did make for one very sweet ending to our weekend.
